Dear Friends,
The WSO Spring
Convention
Hood River, April 4, 5&6, 2008.
Four Curry County watercolorists, Alexandra Eyer, Sharon Guinn
and Shelly Wierzba of Gold Beach, and Horst Wolf of Brookings
have been juried into the Watercolor Society of Oregons
(WSO) 43rd Annual Aqueous Media Exhibit in Hood River, OR. Their
paintings were among the 80 selected by juror Donna Zagota of
Michigan, from a total of 387 works submitted. Eyers painting
Beach House won an award of distinction and will
be in the traveling show of 20 paintings that will tour the
state starting on May 1st, 2008. The full exhibit will be open
until April 30 at the Columbia Center for the Arts (CCA) in
Hood River, OR. CCA is located in downtown Hood River at 215
Cascade Street.
This was a fun show. It started Friday
night with a meet & greet party at the prestigious Hood
River Best Western, where the newest members of WSO were introduced
and where some of their works were displayed. Saturday morning
presented a variety of programs: from paint-outs to critique
sessions with the juror. In the afternoon the exhibit opened
at the Columbia Center of the Arts, a wonderful facility. I
wish we had a similar venue in Brookings. Bill Sturman, the
local chairman for the exhibit, had done a magnificent job hanging
the show with his crew. As usual the work was outstanding. This
spring there was an amazing number of nonrepresentational and
abstracts work to be seen. The WSO shows seem to tend more and
more in this direction, which is just fine with me.
The high point of the event was the
awards banquet at the Gorge Room of the hotel. The food was
excellent; the wine bar had a good selection; there was even
a jazz pianist entertaining the artists and guests. A great
experience. In 2010 we will have the WSO exhibit and convention
in Brookings! Artists and their spouses from all over the state,
most of them from the greater Portland area, will descent on
our little town. We have our work cut out.!!
Horst
