The 13 October
Art Walk - Report by Horst, photos by Steve Combs
We lucked out again with the weather;
65 degrees and not a cloud in sight! It was a perfect day
for Pete Chasar to lead out-of-town visitors from venue to
venue. Following the program of special events, Pete started
with the Central Gallery, where owner Eldon Gosset quadrupled
the gallery space since the last Art Walk. Principal artist
was Alexandra Eyer from Gold Beach, who demonstrated portrait
painting throughout the evening with Hosrt Wolf and Friends
providing the background music. As a special event the "Island
Girls" (from Coney Island and Manhattan Island) voiced
their impressions of art on the West Coast, to the delight
of their audience. A new musical duet, Saun & Steve (vocals
& guitar) also made an appearance. We are delighted to
have them among the musicians of the Art Walk from now on.
Next on the program was a talk by
photographer and digital guru Jim Coffee at Diamond Electronics.
Jim showed his panoramic (6 pictures blended together) photographs
and talked about the future of digital photography. One of
the listeners was Richard Rahmlow from Bandon's 2nd Street
Gallery, who recently founded the Oregon Coast Photographic
Workshop. Jim and Richard are both photography teachers.
The next event was Pam Bisgrove's
reading at Words and Pictures. As usual, Pat was an inspiration
to the larger than usual crowd. Nancy Tuttle, our resident
woodcarver, showed her masks and sculptures, as well as some
fascinating ink drawings of strange creatures. Nina Poulsen
provided the musical background on the keyboard.
I don't have the space to even mention
the rest of the venues, so you will have to look at Steve's
photos for that. So we fast-forward to the final Art Walk
station: the library.
Jerry Moffit played the classical
music requested by the abstract artists on display there.
Shirley Hyatt presented an interlude of violin solos, before
the artists, Pete Chasar, Dale Hendrix and Lorraine Filippone
talked about what inspired them to create those huge canvasses,
which are hardly ever seen in Brookings. I was impressed by
the size and the spiritual content of their work.
The Limericists, under their Queen,
Lynne Guild, presented their views of abstract art and artists,
to the delight of the assembled art lovers. There was lots
of laughter! The highlight of the evening was the live auction
of T-shirts, that were hand painted with images by the Limericists.
Art Walk photographer Steve Combs acted as judge AND auctioneer.
His persistence, creativity and high pressure tactics raised
over $500 for the Brookings Food Bank. Way to go, Steve!
Tune in again at the end of October
for the program of the November 10 Art Walk.
Trick or treat,
Horst
