The
12 May, 2007 Art Walk - as reported
by Horst
We
lucked out again: No rain. Although
the tourist season hasn't started
yet, we had lots of local fans
coming out. Artist Pete Chasar
conducted the Art Walk Tour
starting at the Manley Art Center,
where oil painter Jim McCarten
showed how to prepare a masonite
board for painting. Even an
achieved artists like Jim looks
for ways to cut costs, but without
giving up quality.
Next
stop Central Gallery, where
Christina Olsen showed her latest
works and where three young
fiddlers, Emerson Goode and
brothers Nels and Ryan Johnson
with their teacher Shirley Hyatt
played for he crowd. It's heart
warming to see kids like those
picking up from their elders
and carry on the tradition.
I don't
have the space here to report
on all ten venues; our Art Walk
is getting bigger all the time,
but the space on my website
remains the same. So I will
concentrate on the special events.
At Words and Pictures the sensation
was the exhibit of Sara Broderick's
mermaids, about a dozen-and-a-half
full size watercolor sheets
plus the sculpture that started
it all. The place was jammed
most of the time. As a special,
one of Sara's students, Judith
Payne, and Gold Beach's celebrated
Wizard of Odd, Earl Mohr, recited
poetry about mermaids, most
of it hilariously comical. Two
art forms came together with
humorous contributions, hurray!
The
concentration of special events
was in the library, to celebrate
a show my buddy Dale Wells had
put together, featuring works
by himself and four other artists
of the Manley Art Center: "Cars,
Nothing but Cars." The
hostess, Margareth Cowley, had
contributed one of her own watercolors,
a rusty old truck, to make the
exhibit complete. Dale wore
a car mechanic's outfit for
the occasion. He looked amazingly
good in it - considering his
age.
Entertainment
was by Horst Wolf and Friends.
Horst was lucky to get jazz
guitarist Phil Mack to sit in
for the first two hours. Phil
kept Horst on keyboard and Jan
Marney and Steve Matson (Crescent
City) on percussion gasping
for air. The crowd loved it.
At 6 pm Art Walkers had a surprise.
Laurie Johnson, one of the teachers
of the Brookings Tai Chi Club,
gave a talk and demonstration
(the first chapter of Tai Chi).
She explained that Martial Arts
are not just for self defense,
but for finding the inner self,
for relaxation and for reaching
a healthy and content old age.
Looking at Laurie you can tell
it works.
The
last chapter of the Walk was
contributed by the Limericists
at 6:30 pm. They were introduced
by the newly elected Limerick
Queen, Lynne Guild of our beloved
PILOT. Lynne had them show up
in togas with laurel wreaths
on their head and bells ringing
and horns blaring. Despite of
the new look, those guys' poetry
stank to heaven as usual ...................
of course the crowd loved it
as usual. As measured by the
judge's (Brian Scott) decibell
meter, this was the high point
of the evening.
Tune
in again to this station around
the end of May to find the program
for the June Art Walk.
PS:
In June our 2nd Saturday Art
Walk will celebrate its 3rd
anniversary!
