The 10 March, 2007 Art Walk - as reported by Horst

Again we had a pretty good turnout considering the cold and occasional rain. The highlight at Manley was the demonstration of airbrush techniques by Colleen Stafford. Although I came too late to see the demo, I saw the results. One of them, a cardboard panel she had made to look like wood planks, impressed me the most. In the front gallery Dorian James, all dressed up for the occasion, entertained with saxophone solos. Keep on blowing, Dorian.

Since I was an Art Walk musician myself, I had only 30 minutes for the Walk, thus no time to visit Central Gallery and Banana Belt Music. Sorry guys.

At Eye for Art, our gallery for contemporary and abstract art, the owner-artists Barbara Kennedy and Dusanka Kralj mingled with the crowd, although Dusanka was hiding behind the hors d'eouvres when I came in. Maybe she took time out to listen to Lon Goddard and Aura Wright’s sweet Irish songs?

Next door at Signatures the crowd was waiting for the limericist competition, which started at 5 pm with bugle and bell. As usual they made fun of art, art walkers, the town, and each other, and convinced us that you’re never too old to make a fool of yourself. The judge, Brian Scott, measuring the crowds applause with his hi-tec deci-bell meter, declared a tie between Marge Woodfin and Elmo Williams. Unfortunately there was no price. Someone had goofed.

Downstairs, at Terra Cotta, John Archuleta had outdone himself by cooking the best food on the Art Walk. I caught one of the Art Walkers slurping down his third bowl of chili, as he listened to Rapp, the master, singing homemade Western Swing songs. And nice new pottery. You should take a closer look.

At Exotic Woods there was no music! I asked Brian Scott how come? He told me the musicians had left without any apparent reason around 5 PM.

Bad scene, guys. That shouldn’t happen. I know you all play for free, but once you have committed, you should perform, no matter what. Anyway - that’s my opinion. I’m from the old school.

Pete Chasar’s show “Abstract Expressionism” at Words and Pictures was impressive. He showed not only his own work, but also that of friends. I was sorry not to have more time to hear him talk. But I had a chance to listen to the Wizard, Earl Mohr of Gold Beach, and his humorous “Musepaper Clippings.” He was a riot.

At the library I met the photographers whom Vi Burton had enticed to contribute to a unique photography exhibit. Well worth another visit in the following weeks. A surprise was the Carl Rovainen “trio.” They had grown to a quintet, featuring a real bass! Way to go, Carl!

Before I let you go, I would like you to look at the left side of this page. Under StudioWolf News you can read a short report about my present one-man show in Eugene, at the Fenario gallery. If you’re not inclined to read the text, visit my exhibit and look at the pictures. I am quite proud of this show. It shows my latest figurative work.

Visit this site again at the beginning of April and you will see the program for the Art Walk of April 14. Hang in there and stay healthy,

Horst
