The
9 June, 2007 Art Walk - as reported by Horst,
photographs by Steve Combs
Despite the heaviest
rain we had yet on an Art Walk night, the attendance
on its 3rd anniversary was amazing. We had another
first: 11 venues participated, the largest number
ever. We are growing bigger. There is not enough
space here to report it all. The following selection
was limited by the time the reporter and photographer
could spare from their other duties.
At Manley Eva Maria
Klaas and Mary Jane Carlson demonstrated how
to make Raku pottery. Although it was not possible
to do the firing outside as planned, the presentation
was of great interest to Art Walkers who had
wondered how those amazing patterns on Raku
pottery are created.
Next station our local
College (SWOCC). Here art instructors Sara Broderick
(Brookings) and Dauna Roberts (Gold Beach) had
put together a show of over 100 works including
their own, that of students and college staff.
An amazing array of painting on all levels.
At Signatures Gallery
photographer Don Rommes (Gold Beach) had put
together a show of large photographic prints
of landscapes of the American West. In my humble
opinion one of the best photographic exhibits
we have seen on our Art Walk. Keyboard artist
Tom Tanzi was in a good mood and played some
of the happiest music Ive ever heard him
play.
Downstairs at John
Archulettas Terra Cotta Corner played
the Wild River Ramblers with their new guitarist
Ronn Johnson: very good, but had he played bass
it would have sounded even be better. Johns
homemade chili was the best - as usual.
At Eye for Art the
special exhibit Seeing in Red was
an eye opener you shouldnt miss. Artists
Destiny Schwartz was tucked away in the back
gallery and was easy to miss. Her pieces are
mostly small scale. They show a great sense
of humor. Seeing a raven sitting on a six-deck
hamburger made my day.
Exotic Wood Gallery
showed the colorful oils of Jeanne Steele of
Gold Beach. We havent seen her work for
quite a while in Brookings. Brian Scott was
well advised to offer her a one-person show.
The Rogue River Jam, also from Gold Beach, played
up a musical storm, singing in clean harmony.
We are lucky they come to Brookings on Art Walk
night and play for us.
The Artist Talk
at Words and Pictures was given by the two artists
of the month, Audi Stanton and Pete Chasar,
followed by Maureen Staggs, our Poetry
Coordinator, who read from her own works.
Last station: Chetco
Community Library, where the winners of the
Azalea Festival Art Contest exhibit their work.
Every painting has a blue ribbon attached to
it! The two special events starting at 6 pm
were both highly enjoyable. First the Trapp
Family of our local Pelican Players, 7
kids from 5 to 17 with their stage parents,
entertained with songs from the Sound
of Music, the musical presently showing
at their theater at the north-end of Brookings.
Heart warming! Second, Patricia Bisgrove, known
in town as a writer of poetry and other esoteric
stuff, did another Art Walk first: a demonstration
of Culinary Art: how to make the perfect Caesar
Salad. She was assisted by Leslie Wolf, who
obviously had a good time offering a taste of
the final product to selected (by her) individuals
Tune in again at the
end of June for the program of the July Art
Walk (7/14). Until then stay dry and buy art,
Horst
