The Art Walk of Jan 12, 2008, report by Horst with photos by Steve Combs

The first Art Walk of the new year was a resounding success. Although hardly a tourist was in sight, our locals turned out in great numbers. No wonder, there was lots to see and hear.

The special events started in the Central Gallery, where the Limericists’ Queen, Lynne Guild, had her troops reporting on the past holiday season. She paraded the latest member of her gang, Jim Hyslop from Australia (if you don’t believe it, just listen to his accent), to the assembled crowd. Art Walkers had come all the way from Crescent City and Gold Beach to listen to the combined wisdom of Lynne's motley crew. Marge Woodfin was declared the winner by Judge Brian Scott, who sported a high-tech applause meter to make sure there was no favoritism. Immediately following were the siren voices of the B.I.G.s presenting hits of the '60s and '70s, accompanied by Horst Wolf and Friends, known to Art Walkers for their mellow chamber jazz.

Signature Gallery presented a collection of last year’s major artists, among them Drew Struzan (Pasadena), Duncan Regehr (Victoria, Canada), Maggi Price (New Mexico,) and Jan Kunz (San Francisco). When I saw the photos Steve took, I recognized NOLA RANGE, a relative newcomer to our coast. Why did I put her name in capitals? She is the creator and maintainer of a new web site, which everyone interested in the arts in our area should have on his/her computer:

www.wildriverscoastart.com

As the URL tells you: her web site reports the latest news about artists and art events on our Wild Rivers Coast. Welcome, Nola, to our art community. We need your talent.

At “Pieces of Time”, our new frame shop, photo studio and art gallery, Julianne Livingston gave a demonstration of the art of acid staining and engraving, a first on the Art Walk. Art Walkers also had a chance to talk to Susan Brown, gallery owner and accomplished framer. But her new gallery does not exist yet! Well, not officially. The ribbon cutting will take place on January 26 at 4 pm. Make sure you go there and see for yourself. Good work at reasonable prices! I just had 10 of my paintings framed there, and I am very happy. So I don’t hand you just empty words.

At Words and Pictures, the literary hub of our Art Walk, Clif Siples of Nesika Beach read from his works. From eye and ear witnesses I hear that his presentation was hilarious. Watch out, Limericists, here comes the long-needed competition.

The exquisite representative art show in the library was supplied by five Crescent City artists: Lynne Parker, Garretta Lamore, Joy Johnson, and the photographer couple Larry and Bette Depee. Garretta also imported her cello trio (herself, S. Wakefield and J. Haley) to start the special events in the library at 6 pm, followed by concert pianist Christy Dolan, another newcomer to our area. Christy played concert selections from the Romantic Era. As I am writing this report, I am being told from numerous Art Walkers who listened to her performance, that her concert was the high point not only of the January 2008 Art Walk, but was the most memorable performance by a musician in the 3 years and 8 months history of our Art Walk. Thank you, Christy. We hope to hear you play many more times on future Art Walks.

Tune in again to this site towards the end of January for the program of the next Art Walk.
