The 9 December,
2006 Art Walk - Report
This Art Walk was unusual for several
reasons: first, it was a rainy December night and yet - people
showed up in unexpected numbers. Second, the South West Oregon
College participated the first time in the Art Walk; with about
80 works their's was the largest exhibit. Third, a record of
11 venues participated, an all-time high since the inception
of the Art Walk exactly two and a half years ago. Brookings
has come a long way in a short time
The bad news was, that we were short
of musicians and thus I was nailed to my chair behind the keyboard
in the library. So that's the only place I could take pictures.
Luckily Katja Ulman, our visitor from Germany, took some shots
in other places, which I have included.
The news in the library was that now
we have a donor for the refreshments, Steve Combs of Mini Stor-It
in Harbor. Thank you Steve, you finally have relieved a problem
that has aggravated us for a long time. In addition, we have
now a steady library hostess, Margaret Cowley. Thank you Margaret.
Another pleasant surprise was the first appearance of the Sea
Strings on the Art Walk: Alex Wade (1st violin), Marian Boye
(2nd violine), Sybil Wakefield (viola) and Janet Haley (cello).
With ample room and seating available for the Art Walkers, the
Sea Strings' concert was truly enjoyable.
As I was told, Ronn Johnson and Sons,
a string quartet of a different breed at Terra Cotta Corner,
also was an Art Walk favorite. And then there was Ginko, a 5-year
old violinist accompanied by Christopher, her dad. So we had
musicians of all ages: from 5 (Ginko) to 76 (Horst), and artists
of all ages, from the students at the college (I guess starting
at 18) to some artists over 80 (I don't think they want their
names mentioned).
That's all I have space for. Let's
hope Bill Schlichting and Marge Woodfin of the PILOT will come
up with more pictures and better text in their report. But remember,
I beat them by at least 2 days, sometimes by a week or more!
Tune in again around the end of the
year and you will find the program for the 13 January Art Walk
in this spot. Until then: stay warm and dry and have a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Horst
