The Art Walk of December 8, 2007, report by Horst with photos by Steve Combs

After a week of rain, a Saturday of sunshine! The perfect weather for the Art Walk. The special events program started at the Central Gallery, where the large contemporary oils and acrylics of Daemian Hawthorne of Port Orford occupied the majority of the wall space. His latest works are based and a warm and sensuous palette of predominantly muted reds, yellows and oranges. Fascinating work, at least in the eyes of this viewer.

Jan Norwood, the Brookings Travel Blogger, well known in the community and beyond through the humorous email she sends out describing her travel adventures with companion Bob Bryan, started the proceedings. The emphasis of her talk this time was on - believe it nor not - the various toilets, bathrooms and beds they encountered in their recent travels through Oregon and Northern California. Pretty funny! Immediately following was a set of Christmas songs presented by the new Brookings Chorale. Their performance was warmly received by the audience.

A new gallery made its first appearance on the Art Walk. Pieces of Time (POT) Gallery of Gold Beach, owned and operated by Dennis and Susan Brown has opened up a new art gallery including frame shop and photography studio in the location of Brian Scott's former Exotic Woods Gallery. The entertainment was by another Gold Beach import, the Rogue River Jam, a trio of vocals, guitars and bass. The first artists of the month in POT's new Brookings location was Christina Olsen, who was present and ready to talk to anyone about her colorful whimsical art.

The largest set of continuous entertainment ever on an Art Walk was to be found in the library, where Carl Rovainen and Friends had put together a one hour program titled "International Songs and Dances." There were at least two dozen participants as you can see from the photos. And in between all this singing and dancing the Sea Strings, our beloved local string quartet, performed Christmas music in front of the impressive contemporary art pieces of local artists Barbara Kennedy, Dusanka Kralj and Destiny Schwartz.

Our local SWOCC (Southwestern Oregon Community College) was participating in the Art Walk with over hundred works of art by students and faculty of Gold Beach, Brookings, and Crescent City (College of the Redwoods), with a dance demonstration by Debbie Weist of "Dance with Debbie Studios" in Crescent City. Musical entertainment was by Billie Ruth, Saun and Steve.

There was so much going on during the December Art Walk, that we could only pick a small cross section of the artists, musicians, and participants. I apologize to those we had to leave out.

Tune in again to this website at the end of December, when you will find the program for the January Art Walk.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all of you,
Horst
