The
Art Walk of 9 August, 2008
report by Horst, photos by Steve Combs
It was another cloudless
afternoon downtown Brookings, when artist Pete Chasar
assembled his tour group in front of the Manley Art
Center. Looking down on them from Stout Park was a
giant rubber ducky, put there by the Rotary Club to
announce their "Ducky Derby." On September
21st, up to a thousand duckies will be released upstream
Chetco. The owner of the first rubber duck to arrive
by the Harbor will win a huge prize! You can buy these
duckies at Manley or the PILOT office for $5 each.
It was a great day for the
KASPER Kids (Brookings Kids After-School
Program). At Manley, these kids showed the art they
had created under PBAA member Janeen Vick. In the
basement of Wrights Frame Shop, they showed
the artwork they had learned from artist/musician
Billie Ruth. And on the stage in Art Walk Alley, they
entertained their parents and other Art Walkers with
songs in five different languages, taught by Billie
Ruth and Leslie Wolf.
On the west end of Art Walk
Alley, Scott Graves, editor of our PILOT, conducted
a drum circle of adults. He had a half dozen or so
congas and bongos, and a bag of smaller percussion
instruments. At times, up to ten drummers
were thumping out a strong beat. Great fun! Lets
do that again, Scott.
The drums could be heard
inside the one-day-only CABARET, the former Terra
Cotta Corner. But that didnt bother Marshall
Thompson, vocalist/guitarist from Chico, CA. He kept
playing for the Art Walkers who had come in to taste
the wine offered by Lorraine Swigert from Bella Italia,
snack on the hors doeuvres donated by Mini-Storit
and served by Margaret Cowley, and admire the whimsical
art of Christina Olsen. I think it would be a great
addition to our Art Walk if the CABARET could be made
permanent. Let me hear what you think via this website
(click on Contact Information").
Another party was going on
at the Library. The Friends of the Library
had a large sheet cake to celebrate the 15th birthday
of our New Library. This was followed
by a classical concert performed by the Sea Strings,
the quartet we consider our own, although not all
members live in Brookings.
For more Art Walk venues
and events than I mentioned above, go to Nolas
website (wildriverscoastart.com) and see what she
heard and saw.
Thats all for today.
Tune in again at the end of August, when you'll find
the program for the next Brookings Art Walk on Saturday,
September 13th, 4 to 7 PM.
